How to Get a CPF in Brazil: A Foreigner's Guide

The CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is Brazil's individual taxpayer identification number. Think of it as Brazil's equivalent of a Social Security Number (USA), National Insurance Number (UK), or TFN (Australia). As a foreigner in Brazil, getting a CPF is one of the first things you should do — it unlocks almost everything.

Why You Need a CPF

Without a CPF, daily life in Brazil becomes surprisingly difficult. You'll need it for:

  • Opening a bank account (required by all Brazilian banks)
  • Getting a phone plan (prepaid SIMs technically don't require one, but postpaid plans do)
  • Renting an apartment (landlords and agencies require it)
  • Making purchases — many online stores (including MercadoLivre and Amazon Brazil) require a CPF at checkout
  • Using PIX — Brazil's instant payment system requires a CPF to register
  • Signing up for services — streaming, internet, utilities, and gym memberships all ask for it
  • Filing taxes if you become a tax resident

Even tourists benefit from having a CPF. It lets you make purchases, get tax refunds, and use digital services during your stay.

How to Get a CPF — Three Methods

Method 1: Apply Online (From Outside Brazil)

Since 2023, foreigners can apply for a CPF online through the Receita Federal website without being in Brazil.

  1. Visit Receita Federal's CPF portal
  2. Fill out the form with your personal details (name, date of birth, nationality, passport number)
  3. Upload a copy of your passport
  4. Submit — no fee is charged for online applications
  5. Your CPF number is typically generated within minutes to a few hours

This method is the fastest and easiest. The CPF number is issued directly — you don't receive a physical card.

Method 2: At a Receita Federal Office (Inside Brazil)

If you're already in Brazil, you can walk into any Receita Federal office:

  1. Bring your passport (original + copy)
  2. Bring proof of address in Brazil (hotel booking, Airbnb confirmation, or utility bill)
  3. Fill out the application form at the office
  4. No fee is charged
  5. You'll receive your CPF number on the spot or within 24 hours

Method 3: At a Brazilian Consulate (Outside Brazil)

If the online method isn't working for you, visit your nearest Brazilian consulate:

  1. Schedule an appointment
  2. Bring your passport and a completed application form
  3. Pay a small processing fee (varies by consulate, usually $15–$40 USD)
  4. Processing takes a few days to a couple of weeks

Understanding Your CPF Number

Your CPF is an 11-digit number in the format XXX.XXX.XXX-XX. Once issued, it's yours for life — it never expires and never changes, even if your passport number changes.

You'll be asked for your CPF constantly in Brazil. Memorize it, save it in your phone, and keep a photo of the confirmation document.

CPF vs. CRNM — What's the Difference?

Common Problems and Solutions

"My CPF is showing as irregular"

This usually means the Receita Federal has flagged your registration — often because of missing data or because you haven't filed a tax declaration that was expected. Visit a Receita Federal office with your passport to resolve it, or use the online regularization tool at the Receita Federal website.

"The online form won't accept my name"

Brazilian systems struggle with very long names, accented characters, or names with more than four parts. Try using your name exactly as it appears on your passport, without accents. If that fails, apply in person.

"I already have a CPF but lost the number"

You can retrieve your CPF number online using your passport details at the Receita Federal website, or by calling their hotline: 146 (from within Brazil).

Tips for Success

  • Apply online first — it's free and fast. Only visit an office if the online method fails.
  • Keep your CPF number saved in multiple places (phone notes, email, cloud storage).
  • Don't confuse CPF with CNPJ — CNPJ is the business equivalent. As an individual, you need a CPF.
  • Update your details if you change your passport or visa status. You can do this online or at a Receita Federal office.
  • Get your CPF early — ideally before or immediately after arriving in Brazil. It's the key that unlocks almost every other administrative process.
